Dated 1875, gilt crowned globe marks, listed as shape no. 1937, signed either L.(ouis) Solon or with an MLS monogram
Of baluster form, the trumpet neck with a beaded collar, flanked by gilt enriched rope-twist handles with bearded Bacchic head terminals, each finely painted and hand-tooled in white slip with classical companion figures holding hoops, he with a cockerel perched on his left hand; she with arms open wide in a stance of surprise, above a key-pattern band, the reverse with opposing theatrical masks emblematic of Comedy and Tragedy suspended from ribbon-tied bows entwined with trailing vine, on a stepped flaring foot

Lot Essay

Solon's Illustrated Journal records the present pair, 'Cerceaux', as completed between the 11th of November 1874 and the 11th of January 1875. The margin notes refer to Thomas Mellor assisting with the ornament and Henry Hollins working on the theatrical heads on the verso. Their labour combined with Solon's totals in excess of 36 days.
