Lot Essay
Between the 11th of January and the 11th of February 1877, Solon's Illustrated Journal records a 'Paire de vases f(on)d. vert br.(un) L'ouie & la vue'. This entry likely corresponds to the present example, however the potting cypher is for six years later.
A period image of the pair is entered in the photographic albums preserved at Mintons. See the archival index on page 58. The companion vase is similarly composed and depicts a maiden flanked by musical instruments and putti. As such it is a likely match for the subject 'L'ouie' which can be translated as 'Hearing' or 'Audience'.
