FONTANA ARTE: A PRIVATE COLLECTION FROM A ROMAN APARTMENT "Fontana's historic image, while being chronologically linked to the early days of Italian design, turns its back on the rigidity and the schematic programming of Modern Movement design - instead it claims an Italian approach to modernity, composed of an unprejudiced freedom of imagination joined with solid artisanal capacities." Franco Raggi, Fontana Arte, 1998 Fontana Arte was founded in Milan in 1933 by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana, who together with Pietro Chiesa as artistic director, sought to produce innovative high quality glassware, lighting and glass furniture. In 1945 the company was acquired by St Gobain, and in 1954 Max Ingrand was appointed artistic director, though he retained his own design studio in Paris. His arrival inaugurated an artistic revolution within the firm, with a concentration upon sophisticated modernist forms executed by highly-trained apprentices. The following thirteen lots were purchased by the vendor's father during the mid-1960s.
