Lot Essay

This unique set of four dining chairs, which feature off-white Resinflex upholstery, was commissioned by the vendor's father. Acting upon the advice of his friend - then a professor of Architecture at the Politecnico di Torino, a colleague and friend of Mollino, and subsequently the vendor's godmother - Mollino was approached and the set of four chairs executed by Apelli & Varesio.

Examples of this design were primarily utilised in the Casa Editores Lattes, Turin, one of Mollino's most expansive professional commissions of the early 1950s. In keeping with the palette of the Lattes interior, those examples featured red Resinflex upholstery, and as a result of protracted use were subsequently fitted with brass strengthening rails to the legs.
