Edouard Colonna began designing decorative art items and jewellery for Siegfried Bing's Paris gallery L'Art Nouveau in 1898. In 1900 Colonna was invited to design a salon suite for Siegfried Bing's pavilion at the highly influential Exposition Universelle in Paris. The subsequent design was celebrated by critics of the exhibition for its sleek and elegant lines and successful re-working in a modern idiom of forms from the period of the Ancien Régime.
