In the Chinoiserie taste, all of typical form, each of the pair with short neck flanked by bracket handles, the body molded front and back with pottery vignettes including kiln stacking, wheel turning, and glazing and painting, within an ogival lappet band, the sides decorated with scrolling lotus vine, the footrim molded with stylized lotus lappets and raised on four bracket feet; the moon flask molded and decorated to one side with a gilt monkey sitting among pine branches, the reverse with gilt butterflies on flowering vine, flanked by upright scroll handles and pierced lappet flanges, raised on four scroll feet

Lot Essay

Worcester first presented this model at the 1871-72 International Exhibition in London. See The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition 1871, Second Division, p. 59, for a line drawing and description. The scenes on the present pair of vases are based upon 18th century Chinese watercolors. For two similar watercolors entitled Le Tourneur and Garnissage d'un four in the Muse Het Princesshof, Leeuwarden, Pay-Bas, see Jean d'Albis and Cleste Romanet, la porcelaine de Limoges, Paris, 1980, pp. 226 and 228, figs. 256 and 258.
