Lot Essay

The present bronze is a reduction of the monumental group found in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The last in a series of models depicting the Indians' relationship with the White Man, Appeal to the Great Spirit was exhibited at the National Sculpture Society in 1908 and at the Paris Salon of 1909 where it was awarded a gold medal. The Gorham foundry was authorized to cast reductions in three approximate sizes from 1916-47: 37 inches (9), 21 inches (107), and 9 inches (285).
