The present covered pail shares structural qualities with several pieces recorded in Wynyard R. T. Wilkinson, Indian Colonial Silver, 1973. In particular, a butter bucket, by William Henry Twentyman, 1822-1854, features the tiered structure, vertical side handles, pointed dome cover and claw feet (p. 135, fig. A.174). A silver-gilt covered tureen, by Twentyman, Beck & Co., 1822-1826, is also tiered with a pointed dome cover, though its claw feet and acanthus handles are still more comparable to the present example, in their unmistakable reference to English Regency ornament (p. 155, fig. A.196).

Among these butter coolers and butter pails, the ornament of the present example--the narrative scenes that cover this object in horizontal friezes--is uncommon. Indeed, Wynyard Wilkinson proposes that the chasing was possibly done in Poona or Cutch circa 1850-1870.
