The arms are those of Balfour impaling those of Maitland, as borne by James Balfour (d.1845) of Balbirnie, Fife, who married Eleanor Maitland (1790-1869), daughter of James, 8th Earl of Lauderdale.

These dinner plates, and the soup plates in the following lot, were part of a dinner service of 191 pieces, with a total weight of 7,284 oz.
