A fine and early Dutch marriage casket
Apparently unmarked, possibly Frisia, circa 1635
The trunk-shaped casket with four plain ball feet on gadrooned base, the underneath finely engraved with sailing boat, a water barrel on pole house, church and birds, the front with elegant couple in wooded landscape with cart, figure and houses, the back with elegant couple and male figure in wooded landscape with church and houses, the sides each engraved with masked vase with stylised flowers, foliage and fruit, the hinged cover with gadrooned band above spring floral knob, engraved two hands with flaming heart above and surrounded by "VOOR . GODT . EEN.ISTAL . BELOFTE. VT . LIEEFDE . IS . TROV. ", plain swing and partly twisted handle, the outer rims engraved with stylised palmette and floral motifs, one domed side engraved with two hares meeting between foliage, the other with two pigeons courting between foliage, inside the cover a coat-of-arms hanging from a branch and inscribed "A", "S" and the date 1635
