Francois Reuze, maître in 1743.
Reuze worked for more than 50 years in the rue de Cléry, supplying furniture to the French and Swedish courts, being particularly favoured by Marie-Antoinette. His work largely consisted of deeply carved and sculpted fauteuils, bergères, and canapés; this comfortable sculpted and gilded bergere is characteristic of his oeuvre.
A number of pieces by Reuze, including a marquise à la reine, are in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet, Paris (see Anne Forray-Carlier, Le Mobiler du Musée Carnavalet, Dijon, 2000, p.110).
Maria Pia of Savoy (1847 - 1911), daughter of Victor Emanuelle II of Italy, married King Luis I of Portugal (1864). She became queen Dowager in 1889, but her son and grandson were assassinated in 1908 and the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic in 1910 saw her exiled and return to Italy.
