The mottled brown fossil marble top with a moulded edge above a pierced frieze carved with foliage and C-scrolls, on channelled cabriole legs with cabochon clasps and foliate wrapped and hairy hoof feet joined by a foliate and scrolled stretcher, previously blue painted, inscribed in blue chalk 4-36-7 and with a numbered label 000442, the underside of the marble labelled Décoration Intérieure Ebénisterie d'Art Jean Bieder CH-4410 Liestal

Lot Essay

Jean Bieder, like his father before him, worked for the celebrated Parisian cabinet-maker François Linke, initially in around 1922 as ébéniste, and rising to the position of contremaìtre. He returned to his native Switzerland in 1934 to take over the family firm. However, in the last years of Linke's life, it was to Bieder that he turned to carry on the business, knowing him to have the technical and commercial acumen to take over his affairs. A new company was to be formed in which Bieder would hold 60 of the equity, but at the same time Bieder continued to run his restoration, antiques and furnishing business in Switzerland. In the years after Linke's death it was Bieder who was responsible for the dispersal of much of the remaining stock.
