Lot Essay
The present lot was a wedding gift to Charles and Lee Csuri from Roy Lichtenstein in 1950. Lichtenstein and Charles Csuri were both students at Ohio State University, Columbus, studying under Professor Hoyt L. Sherman. It was here that Lichtenstein developed several of the essential elements which would inform his later style, such as the schematic conversion of multi-dimensional objects in nature into the two dimensions required on paper. It was also at Ohio that Lichtenstein first began making etchings, such as Storming the Castle, where early influences of Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso are evident.
