QIANLONG (1736-95)
With iron-red hare-head handles splashed with gilt dots and shaded iron-red frond finial similarly gilt, decorated all over primarily in shades of iron-red, sepia, green, yellow, blue and pink with stylised floral roundels and segmented fruit roundels amongst hibiscus flowers, smaller flowers, and scrolling acanthus leaves
the stand 14¾ in. (37.5 cm.) wide

Lot Essay

Although traditionally known as 'tobacco leaf' and 'pseudo-tobacco leaf' decoration, the leaves do not actually depict those of the tobacco plant. An almost identical tureen, cover and stand is illustrated by J. McClure Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, New York, 1986, colour plate 254, together with other examples of 'tobacco leaf' and 'pseudo-tobacco leaf' wares, including a pair of salts of the same pattern as this tureen. Another tureen, cover and stand of this pattern was exhibited Important Chinese Export Porcelain and Works of Art, The Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, 1998, no. 60. A plate from this service is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.II, no. 555, p. 540.
