CHATEAU MONTELENA

Since 1882, there has been a chteau and winery on the site of Montelena (a contraction of Mount St. Helena). The site of the estate vineyards on the lower slopes of Mount St. Helena to the North of Calistoga was chosen for the stony and well drained soil, perfect for the cultivation of vines. Whilst wine production ceased during Prohibition, like so many California wineries, wine has been made continuously since the repeal. On a recent visit to the winery, I was impressed by the quality of the estate wines, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon which such concentration from low yields.

Napa Vallery
"Chateau Montelena has made so many sensational Cabernets that it seems almost impossible to believe that their 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate could be even more profound than any of the exceptional wines made previously at this property. The black/purple color, the extraordinary bouquet of rich cassis, violets, and licorice, the massive extraction of flavors, sensational depth, super ripeness, and a length that must last over a minute, suggest to me that this is easily the most concentrated and potentially longest-lived Cabernet Sauvignon that Chateau Montelena has ever made. The extract level is incredible, yet the balance is there. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2025." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #89 (Oct 1993)
