Lot Essay

Mr Freedom was established by the visionary clothing renegade Tommy Roberts, who had pioneered the market for vintage clothing through his Carnaby Street store, Kleptomania. From 1969 until early 1971 Mr. Freedom operated from a premises at 430 King's Road, Chelsea, producing Pop Art-inspired clothing. The King's Road address was to have an enduring notoriety for British street fashion, for in late 1971 Robert's re-negotiated the lease on behalf of a certain Mr. McLaren and Ms. Westwood, whose shop 'Let it Rock' opened there at the end of the year.
