Lot Essay
The present lot is a major work from the Ribbon series, the most celebrated group of paintings by Burhan Dogancay.
Whilst on first appearance paintings from this series resemble works of Arabic calligraphy, Dogancay takes as his subject matter ribbons, which curl and fold like fragments of shredded paper on a wall.
Dogancay is known also for his work in collage and décollage, which recall walls and billboards with torn posters and graffiti. In the Ribbons series he combines the traces of the written word with painted trompe l'oeil renditions of torn paper to produce powerful images which anchor the modern to the past.
