Lot Essay

The vertical marquetry panels depicting mirror images of stylised birds, are first found in a sketch by Koloman Moser dating from 1899. A variation of this tessellating marquetry device, depicting fish, was employed by Moser for the suite of furniture Der reiche Fischzug, 1900.
Gabriele Fahr-Becker, Wiener Werkstätte 1903-1932, Cologne, 1994, p. 111 (a chair by Moser with the identical inlaid panel is illustrated in the dining room of the Hölz apartment, 1913); Maria Renhofer, Koloman Moser Leben und Werk 1868-1918, Vienna, 2002, p. 49 (ink drawing study for the marquetry bands featuring stylised bird design illustrated).
