Lot Essay

The particular type of marble for the pietra paesina plaques is mined in the Arno region of Italy. Its literal translation, 'landscape stone', aptly captures its fantastically coloured and figured graining. This landscape pattern was created when the stone fractured from the earth's movement and water passed through, reacting with the oxides in its chemical makeup. The marble is then cut to exploit these patterns depicting abstract landscapes.
