Lot Essay

Stylistic comparisons between the present panels and the works of Felipe Vigarny, suggest that the four reliefs of the Church Fathers could have been carved in Burgos, where he was an influential figure in the 1520s. In looking at the two alabaster fragments of SS Jerome and Joseph in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Trusted, loc. cit.), and at the present lot, one can see similar facial types, treatment of the locks of hair and large hands.
