THE PROPERTY OF THE ACTRESS MARIA SCHELL
Maria Schell was born Margarete Schell on 5th January 1926 in Vienna. As part of a family of actors and directors she herself became famous as a soulfoul leading lady of International films. She made her film debut aged sixteen under the name of Gritti Schell and in the 1950's her career reached it's peak when she won the 1954 Cannes Festival Award as best actress for her performance in Helmut Kautner's "Die Letzte Brücke/The Last Bridge" and the 1956 Venice Festival prize for René Clement's "Gervaise". She was known and loved as a passionate, intense leading lady.
In the fifties Miss Schell travelled to Sri Lanka where she aquired an attractive half-hoop of sapphires and diamonds. On her return to Munich this was placed with the Jeweller Rothmüller who created a bold and stylish bangle by setting the sapphires and diamonds into 22K gold.
The bangle was presented to Miss Schell by her husband Horst Hächler on the occassion of their marriage on the 26th of April 1957, the date being engraved onto the inside of the bangle.
Miss Schell immediately became very attached to the bangle and has worn it throughout her lifetime including during the making of many of her films. A copy was made in rubies which is now in the possession of her daughter.
