Luukkola uses fire and long exposure time to display the existence of man in the landscape without showing the figure itself and to express motion in his series Behind the Horizon, begun in 2004. For Rowing, he affixed flaming torches to the boat and oars; the traces left by the flames -- the repeated curves and the single line in between -- represent the movement of the boat and oars. The dusky Nordic blue, a signature element in his work, penetrates this striking landscape.
Luukkola is currently working towards a post-graduate degree at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and holds an MA in Science from the Helsinki University of Technology. His works have been exhibited widely in Europe and are held in several institutional, corporate and private collections. Luukkola has been awarded a number of grants and prizes, including awards by the Finnish Book Art Committee for his books, and is a finalist in the Fotofinlandia competition. He lives and works in Helsinki.
