Lot Essay

Anna Maria Draycott was the only heir of Mr Draycott, of Sunbury, Middlesex. This picture dates stylistically to c.1763, the year before her marriage to George, 2nd Earl of Pomfret (1722-1785). Reynolds painted the sitter on two further occasions, both full-length and in private collections (see Mannings, op. cit., p. 186, nos. 601-2).
