Lot Essay

Grassi was predominantly a portraitist and history painter. He travelled to Poland at the behest of Stanislas Augustus (1732-1798) the last King of Poland, and also travelled extensively in Italy, spending considerable time in Rome. He was elected the director of the Dresden Academy in 1817.
