Lot Essay
The elegant Grecian-domed lantern would have housed a candle-branched colza-oil urn or air-lamp as manufactured by the New Street Square firm of brass-founders established in 1784 by Messrs George Penton, Son & Co. (see John J. Wolfe, Brandy, Balloons, & Lamps,1999, p. 153). It was probably this firm that supplied another lantern of this form for Woodcote, Surrey following the purchase of the estate in 1788 by Lewis de Teissier, later Baron de Tessier (see J. Harris, Woodcote Park, Furniture History, 2007, p.181, fig. 3)
