A SILVER-MOUNTED LIGNUM VITAE TANKARD
UNMARKED, PROBABLY ENGLISH PROVINCIAL, MID 17TH CENTURY
The drum-shaped body with bands of fluting and basket-weave decoration, the silver mounts around the rim and cover both edged with stylised acanthus leaves, on three bun feet, the carved cover centred by a flower-head with silver ball finial, the triangular thumb-piece decorated with an inverted heart motif to front and surmounted by two scrolls, the thumb-piece extending onto the cover in the form of three leaves, the central leaf with diaperwork hatching, and extending onto the handle with three similar leaves below which is engraved a rose motif
