RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, Nikolai Andreyevich (1844-1908). Autograph music manuscript, 'Sinfonietta', signed with initials (at head and foot), and inscribed at end 'Dedicated to G.O. Diutsh', Taitsy, 30 May 1884, a heavily revised working manuscript in short score, the first draft in ink with extensive cancellations in blue pencil and a few emendations in lead pencil, in five systems of two staves on 6 pages, oblong 4to (260 x 375mm) (minor disolouration, tears to inner margin, including loss of fragments approx 45 x 45mm to inner margin of first and last leaves), title page in another hand, 'Dedicated to G.O. Dütsch Russian Sinfonietta in A major' (title page torn with loss of fragment approx 230 x 90mm from upper left corner). Provenance: Aaron Rubinstein (b.1850, cousin of Anton and Nikolai Rubinstein); and by descent (ownership stamps apparently roughly removed from first and last leaves and possibly title page, ?1930s).
A LOST RIMSKY-KORSAKOV MANUSCRIPT. Rimsky-Korsakov's Sinfonietta on Russian Themes emerged from a string quartet based entirely on Russian folk tunes which he had composed in summer 1879; he reworked the first three movements into the Sinfonietta in 1884, during what was otherwise an almost blank period in terms of composing activity. According to the Collected Works, vol.20 (Moscow, 1954), 'The whereabouts of the autograph score of the Sinfonietta are unknown', and it appears not to have been examined by any Rimsky-Korsakov scholar. In addition, Gerald R. Seaman notes (Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov: A Guide to Research (Garland, 1988)) that of the 1879 string quartet on Russian folk tunes, only the autograph of the fourth movement, which was not used in the Sinfonietta, survives. The dedicatee, the composer and conductor Georgi Ottonovitch Dütsch (1857-1891), was a former pupil of Rimsky's at the Conservatory (though he expelled him for absenteeism); he became a close friend, and was co-conductor with Rimsky of the Russian Symphony Concerts from 1886 onwards.
