MANSA, Johann Ludwig. Copenhagen: Friederich Brummer, 1798.
Two parts in one volume, oblong 2° (297 x 479 mm). Engraved titles and 24 hand-coloured engraved plates by G.N. Angelo coloured in a contemporary hand. (A few plates slightly shaved.) Contemporary red half roan and patterned paper boards, gilt-lettered spine (covers scuffed with lossses to paper, particularly on rear cover, spine slightly rubbed). Provenance: 'GJB' (gilt monogram on binding) -- Gustav Troude (contemporary signature on front pastedown) -- Safstaholms Bibliothek (bookplate) -- Jorgen Birkedal Hartmann (bookplate).
An ambitious landscaping manual by the royal gardener to King Christian VII of Denmark. Although a German by birth, Mansa is credited with introducing English landscape design to Denmark. The same title, in German and French respectively, introduces two sets of twelve plates; in each case the first plate provides a key to the colouring and architectural symbols used. Part one also has a single letterpress leaf with a 'Verseichniss der Bäume, Sträuche und Laubhölzer auf den Planen'. The title to the second part is inscribed 'Cahier II'. Not in BL.
