The Sunday Sale - The Collection of the late Dr. Henry David Ginsburg (Lots 1-198) Born in New York in 1940, Henry David Ginsburg was first introduced to Asia with a visit to India. He went on to study French literature at Columbia University before joining the US Peace Corps, which sent him to Thailand. He taught English in a provincial town there between 1964 and 1966, moving to London in 1967 to commence his doctoral studies in Thai Literature at The School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, under the tutelage of Stuart Simmonds. Dr. Henry David Ginsburg went on to become a leading expert on Thai painting and manuscripts and joined the British Library in 1973 as their Curator of Thai and Cambodian Collections. A world renowned scholar in the field of Thai manuscript painting, he published two titles Thai Manuscript Painting, in 1989 and Thai Art and Culture: Historic Manuscripts from Western Collections in 2000 as well as numerous papers on the subject. His tenure at the British Library ended with his retirement in 2003. Henry Ginsburg came from a family fascinated by the decorative arts and antiques. His grandfather, John Ginsburg, was a founding partner of Ginsburg & Levy Antiques in New York, his father Benjamin, an avid scholar continued this legacy with his business Benjamin Ginsburg Antiquary on Madison Avenue, and his mother, Cora Ginsburg was one of the worlds leading dealers in European and American costume and textiles. In addition to his scholarly talent, Henry Ginsburg was an accomplished pianist and harpsichordist. 2005 saw a visit of Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand to London and Henry and his friend the amateur flautist Simon Cornwell gave a chamber concert aired on Thai television to celebrate the event. Christie's are delighted to offer Henry Ginsburg's piano and spinet alongside his Collection of Asian art, furniture, pictures and works of art.

Each with a rectangular top above a pierced and carved scrolling frieze, below an undertier on square legs and scrolled feet, one example with indistinct Kanji mark to the underside of the undertier
