Lot Essay

These bold candlesticks have amethyst diamond-cut columns, initially a speciality of the St. Petersburg bronzesmiths Ivan Dippner and Johann Schreiber in the early 19th Century until this fashion was soon adopted by various craftsmen in Moscow in the 1830s. The current lot appears to have been produced there; they are closely related to various examples illustrated in I. Sychev, The Russian Chandeliers, Moscow, 2003, pp. 962-965, and to a pair of chandeliers by the Moscow bronzesmith P. Chizhov and now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (I. Sychev, Russian Bronze, Moscow, 2003, p. 172).
