Both help those to whom life's circumstances have dealt a raw deal, the homeless in London and impoverished girls from the shanty towns of Bahia in northeast Brazil, by offering long-term accommodation and support in the one case and the opportunity for a proper education in the other, enabling individuals to break out of a cycle of failure and poverty. Both charities are small (providing 30 beds and education for 60 girls), were founded and run by charismatic and inspirational people and effectively target individuals who really want to turn their lives around. (They are both pretty ruthless about not supporting those who fail to make use of the opportunities provided.) So, every 1000 we can raise through your generous bid on the night will literally transform someone's chances in life. The Cardinal Hume Centre is a charity helping homeless and socially excluded young people and families all on one site in Westminster. Providing both hostel accommodation and day centre facilities, the Centre recognises that social inclusion is not just about housing, but also about health, education, social and employment issues. As well as practical advice in these areas, the Centre provides on site training in budgeting both for individuals and families, IT skills and even English classes, whilst the People into Jobs Team helps clients actively to see employment. In 2008/9 the Centre needs to raise 2 million to carry out this vital work. www.cardinalhumecentre.org.uk The Bahia Street Trust . Bahia Street helps individual girls from the shanty towns of Salvador who are keen to break out a life of poverty, violence and inequality by offering them an education that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Founded in 1996 by anthropologist Dr Margaret Willson, it started with one student in a rented room. It has grown steadily ever since. Three years ago we built our own school which now provides a well-rounded education for 61 girls, and hope for hundreds of families and community members. www.bahiastreet.org.uk
