Lot Essay

These vases were originally created in jasper circa 1786 and 1790, using designs by John Flaxman originally intended for plaques. The Apotheosis of Homer was the first to be made and was valued very highly by Wedgwood - he presented a vase to the British Museum in May 1786. The bas-relief for the Apotheosis of Virgil was modelled at the end of 1785 and used to create a companion vase in 1790.
