Relatively little is known of Ross who appears to have worked mainly in the West Country. Following in the tradition of Peter Tillemans and Jan Wyck, the artist was also clearly influenced by the work of John Wootton. He had a great talent for equestrian subjects and is best known for his hunting pictures (a set of four works depicting The Duke of Beaufort's Hunt was sold in these Rooms, 15 November 1996, lot 47, for £165,000). He may have been related to Thomas Ross (fl. 1730-57), the decorative and topographical painter.
