After training under Jean-Nicolas Louis Durand in Lyon and under Barthélemy Vignon in Paris, Chenavard entered the Ecole impériale des Beaux-Arts in 1812. He became 'architecte de la préfecture et du département du Rhône' in 1819 and was professor of architecture at the Ecole des beaux-arts in Lyon from 1823 to 1861. He also became a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1862.
This spectacular drawing of a neoclassical interior is typical of an architecture student and may have been Chenavard's entry for one his exams.
