Lot Essay

This wardrobe was likely acquired for Luton Hoo circa 1903 upon the estate's acquisition by the diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher. Wernher bought it from John Leigh, who in turn had purchased it in 1848, five years after a devastating fire destroyed most of the Robert Adam and Robert Smirke features and contents belonging to John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute (1793-1848), in 1843.
