8° (196 x 120mm). (Faint dampstain in the bottom margin, very occasional soiling.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine and label tooled in blind, edges red (extremities and spine lightly rubbed). Provenance: Egor Ushakov (contemporary title inscription).
FIRST EDITION IN RUSSIAN OF MONTECUCCOLI'S POPULAR MILITARY TREATISE, which remained in print throughout Europe in various languages for most of the 18th century. 'It was Raimondo Montecuccoli who, on the tactical basis of the square, formulated the principles of action which brought Austria and Russia such remarkable successes in their wars against the Ottoman Empire' (Cambridge). An excellent copy in contemporary binding. RARE: WorldCat locates only one copy outside of Russia, at Harvard University. The Cambridge History of Islam. p.848; Sopikov 4197; SK 4328.
