(The first and last leaves repaired in the inside margin, some repairs, vol. 2 bound without the half-title or terminal facsimile leaf, spotting throughout, more pronounced in vol.1, occasional dampstain, occasional soiling.) Contemporary non-uniform half roan preserving the original front wrapper of vol. 1 (wrapper reinserted and showing some soiling, joints repaired, some wear at extremities, sides scuffed).

The first part of Gogol's famous satire was printed in an edition of 2400 with money borrowed from Pogodin, while the second was published by his heirs from draft notes found after the author's death.
