A makimono, 19th century
in sumi and colours on paper, illustrating chapters from the legendary Tale of Osuma Saburo, with five illustrated scenes divided by sections of narrative text, the scenes depicting dignitaries and ladies on terraces, in interiors and in gardens, warriors in bloody combat in rocky landscapes and warriors practicing archery within compounds -- max. illustrated section approx. 14¼in. x 119½.in. (36.2cm. x 303.5cm.), inscribed painted by Murayama Takashi in 1844.
