A LONDON DELFT BLEU PERSAN GADROONED OVAL TWO-HANDLED CISTERN
CIRCA 1685
With lion mask and rope-twist ring handles, the interior painted in white enamel with an Oriental figure in a wooded garden within double-line and scroll borders, the exterior with Oriental figures in discussion among shrubs and grasses between borders of scrolls and arches, on three bun feet with dash ornament (one ropetwist handle lacking, flaking to sides, rims, handles and feet)

Lot Essay

A bleu persan cistern bearing very closely related decoration was in the Morgan Collection and subsequently in the Simon Sainsbury Collection, sold in these Rooms on 18th June 2008, lot 259, and illustrated by Michael Archer and Brian Morgan, Fair as China Dishes, English Delftware, From the Collection of Mrs. Marion Morgan and Brian Morgan, International Exhibitions Foundation 1977-1979, Exhibition Catalogue (Washington, 1977), p. 41, cat. no. 20; a second of the same form, also in the Simon Sainsbury Collection, was offered in these Rooms on 18th June 2008, lot 210.
