Lot Essay

The central figures with their astrological instruments are strikingly similar to those seen on a London delft armorial plate (detail illustrated above), dated 1695 and decorated with the arms of London, from the Simon Sainsbury Collection, sold in these Rooms on 18th June 2008, lot 139. Similar stag-hunt decoration also appears on the mug sold in these Rooms on 8th December 2003, lot 1.
