Lot Essay

The portrait of Feldmarshalls August Wilhelm Anton Graf Neidhardt von Gneisenau (1760-1831) is taken from an engraving by Franz Krüger (1797-1857). A biscuit bust of this eminent General was also produced by the factory, see Dietmar Jürgen Ponert, Kunstgewerbe I Keramik Berlin Museum Catalogue (Berlin, 1985), p. 57, no. 40.

Gneisenau proved to be the greatest Prussian general since Frederick the Great, and played a decisive role in defeating the French in the Waterloo campaign.
