A curved tablet scrolled top-rail above a padded back and squab cushion covered in green velvet with scroll arm terminals above a rope-twist front seat-rail, on moulded sabre legs with brass caps and castors, the legs spliced, with ash side and back seat-rails and beech front rail, with metal pressed metal plate, probably a late 19th or 20th century retailer 'B. This elegant Regency bergere is similar to the work of the renowned Edinburgh cabinet-maker William Trotter (d.1834). The rope-twist frieze of this bergere is similar to the symbolic rope-twist carving which was a nautical feature on the six hall chairs that Trotter supplied in 1817 to Trinity House, Leith, Edinburgh at £15 15s. 0d. (F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1983, p. 118 and Furniture History Society Newsletter, August 2002, p. 14). Furniture with a maritime connecton was highly appropriate for use at Trinity House, the Headquarters of the Incorporation of Masters and Mariners of Leith.
A similar pair of mahogany upholstered bergeres with scrolled arms adorned with carved acanthus was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 3 July 2003, lot 169 for £40,800.

This bergere stood in Hotspur's second floor office, and was used to discuss deals.
