Lot Essay

Palampores were used as bed-covers or bed-head hangings and were made in India in Masulipatam, port of Golconda, and at Pulicat. Palampores were also exported through Vizagapatam and Madras, under the control of the English East India Company. A pair of related palampores is at Twickel Castle, Overjissel, Holland, and has a St Petersburg trade stamp dated 1775 (E. Hartkamp-Jonxis, Sitsen uit India Indian Chtinzes, Amsterdam, 1994, pp. 28-31).
