This laurel-swag-draped console demonstrates the tempering of the undulating rococo line by more severe symmetrical ornament pointing to a nascent neo-classicism. A very similar console sold anonymously, Sotheby's, New York, 5 November 1998, lot 437, and a further closely related console with laurel swags centering a floral bouquet sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 1 November 1990, lot 141, while a further console of very similar design was sold Sotheby's, Monaco, 21 February 1988, lot 776.
