Lot Essay

The complex inlay of this commode, with its use of metal, bone and varied woods, is highly original and it is difficult to identify a specific region or workshop. And, like so many of the pieces produced in the German workshops of the mid-18th century, it combines elements from the Chinoiserie mania sweeping the German principalities, as well as Turkish and other fantastic and grotesque figures.
