Lot Essay

Mutel is recorded at Vincennes 1754-1759 and at Sèvres 1765-1767 and again 1771-1774 as a bird and landscape painter and as a painter of edgings.

See Tamara Préaud, ed., Porcelaines de Vincennes, Les origines de Sèvres, Paris, 1997, p. 115, no. 318 for a cup and saucer of the same form and date, similarly incised on the saucer but painted with flowers instead of birds, from the Grandjean Collection and now in that of the musée des Arts décoratifs, Paris.
