The monochrome puce painting after Boucher and the quality of the gilding are particularly fine and typical of Vincennes production at this time. The painter, Mutel, worked sporadically at both Vincennes and Sèvres, specializing in birds, landscapes, and later edgings. He is specifically recorded 1754-1759, 1765-1767 and again 1771-1774.
The present small service for one is lacking its teapot and sugar-bowl, both of which will have had covers. The sugar-bowl was with Adrian Sassoon prior to the purchase of the present pieces a few years ago. The whereabouts of the teapot is unknown.
