Lot Essay
The painter's mark is likely that of Mme. Genévieve-Louise Thévenet Bouillat, whose parents and brother were also painters at Sèvres specializing in flowers. She is recorded as active 1776-1798. Her husband Edme-François is recorded at the factory 1758-1810, also as a flower painter and as a bird painter. Both used a Y, the mark, generally found to the right of the interlaced L's with the date letters at the left rather than enclosed within the interlaced L's, as is the case on the present cup and saucer. However, the handwriting would appear to be that of Mme. Bouillat.
