RUSCONI, Giovanni Antonio (c.1520-1587). I dieci libri d'architettvra ... Secondo i precetti di Vetruuio .... Venice: Nicolini, 1660. 2° (282 x 200mm). Title with woodcut border, numerous woodcut illustrations, some full-page, woodcut head- and tailpieces and historiated initials (lacking gatherings Oo-Pp, title torn in half and repaired on verso few tears with loss of margin, tear to P[1], some staining and spotting throughout, front endpaper detached and trimmed). Contemporary vellum (text-block loose).
Rusconi's woodcuts, 'a new and skilful rendering of many of the Vitruvian woodcuts' (Fowler), were begun as early as 1553 and were intended to illustrate a full translation of Vitruvius. The project remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1587, a brief summary in Italian of Vitruvius's text, appeared in 1590 (two issues) and again in 1660, when 'the blocks in some instances are recut' (Fowler).
