Additional engraved title, printed title in red and black, 22 folding engraved plates (stitching weak at beginning, clean short tear in plate 2, long tear in plate 17 with laminated repair on verso but with 2 small laminated repairs on recto, also lower corner torn away with partial loss of border, margins of some plates a little frayed, some light waterstaining and browning). Contemporary boards, painted in green (colour partially rubbed off, quite rubbed). Provenance: some old annotations in ink on endpapers and occasional corrections in text.

FIRST EDITION of "the most popular surgical text of the 18th century; it underwent numerous editions and translations". The first English translation was published in London in 1743. "Heister is the founder of scientific surgery in Germany. His book contains many interesting illustrations and includes an account of tourniquets used in his time"(Garrison-Morton).
